JOHOR BARU – A fake press release, purportedly issued by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, is circulating on social media, claiming that the island republic has revised toll rates at the Causeway.
The release, bearing Singapore’s Land Transport Authority logo, was widely circulated via Facebook and WhatsApp on Friday.
The release claimed that the new rates would take effect on Sept 15.
The release also had a table detailing the current and “new” toll rates.
In a statement, an LTA spokesman clarified that they have not issued any statement on the revision of toll charges.
Sources said that Singapore authorities have already started investigations into the fake release.
So far, Singapore has yet to raise the toll rates at the Johor Causeway.
It had earlier said that any new toll charges imposed by Malaysian authorities would be matched by Singapore.
Singapore increased its Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fee for all foreign registered vehicles entering the republic from S$20 to S$35 daily, and the Goods Vehicle Permit from S$10 to S$40 monthly.
Tebrau MP Khoo Soo Seang, who also received the fake press release from a friend in Singapore, said that the police or the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should track down those involved in spreading such lies.
“It only creates confusion and panic among the people,” he said, urging people not to spread unverified information.

The increase of VEP is considering too much for Malaysian cars owners to swallow and the further increase of toll charges being a double blows to Malaysians. They are killing their own people and this is not a smart move to win the heart of johorian, The next general election BN will face very serious set back as what i felt. Nowadays not only the Malaysian Chinese and Indian cross over to Singapore to earn a better salary to coup up the high living cost in JB which is partly caused by the in coming Singaporean and the greedy businessman in JB, the Malays are doing so,
For your information, Most of the workshop and firms in JB are paying almost the same salary for locals and foreign workers. The government does nothing on it !
If the highway authority want to collect the toll charges for the highway they built, they can do it outside the CIQ as we can chose not to use their highway after exiting the CIQ !
Singapore LTA can do whatever their think is right. this is their business we have no say on that. If you are not happy about the increase in VEP just forget about drive to the island and stay at home. You are not welcome there after all.
Until now I still wonder why the Malaysian authority do not collect any VEP charges on foreign vehicles. The country is too rich to collect this money ？
We can imposed a VEP charges of a equivalent of RM80 on foreign registered cars and this is not too much to them. After all they can enjoy half prices housing, seafood and all the subsidies food staff in Malaysia and most important they can find a lot of free parking areas in JB..
If they can afford to drive a over 100K sing dollar car a mere RM88 is chicken feet o them.
