JOHOR BARU – Johor will not object if the Government decides to impose a levy on Singaporean cars entering Malaysia.
State Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said besides a token toll charge, Singaporean cars entering the state capital currently do not have to pay any fee.
He said the proposal to impose a levy on these cars, which had been forwarded by Johor to the Federal Government, was reasonable at RM50 (S$20)per vehicle due to Singapore’s favourable exchange rate against the Malaysian ringgit.
“Personally, I see that the fee will not be a burden for Malaysians working in the republic or Singaporeans coming into Johor Baru regularly,” he said in an interview here yesterday.
The proposal, added Hasni, was not new as the previous state administration had made a similar suggestion, adding that this was merely “a follow-up”.
The previous administration, he said, had decided to propose the levy due to the high volume of Singaporean cars using the country’s roads and infrastructure.
The money collected could be set aside to help maintain the roads in the state, he pointed out.
“They (Singaporeans) have caused many problems, especially traffic congestion in the city centre,” he said.
In 2006, the Government had decided that a fee – probably about RM20 – would be levied on cars from Singapore and Thailand to offset some of the petrol subsidy lost to these vehicles. However, this proposal was never carried out.
Hasni said it was unfair for the Singaporean government to impose a fee for any Malaysian-registered vehicles entering the island and to even increase this beginning Aug 1.
On Tuesday, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority had announced an increase for its Vehicle Entry Permit and Goods Vehicle Permit beginning Aug 1, which would see foreign-registered cars having to pay S$35 per day, up from S$20.

Goooooood thinking Msia! So proud
What a joke! Park at tuas for a day and notice the lawlessness by traffic users there… Amazingly, local car plate trouble-makers remain a minority.
Malaysia should set a levy on singapore cars. If they wanna leave their tiny Island for a holiday. Pay for it! Malaysia is not free for them.
if there is such a collection, guess where the money goes to?
Yes.. [;ease impose…
Rm20 is like sgd8? Who cares.
Can justify this quote:
“They (Singaporeans) have caused many problems, especially traffic congestion in the city centre,” he said.
M’sia is too considerate.. That’s why no action taken since 2006.. Shld the government tk this seriously for this time of round it’ll be great.. If msian never complain why shld sporean..
Gd la… SG wanna charge M’sia vehicle, nw M’sia wanna charge SG back lor… Wat goes round comes around lor… Btw, in e article its stated RM50 la (equivalent to S$20)…. Y ppl keep commenting RM20? Read the full article first b4 commenting…
Just realized……its should be implemented long time ago……nation of arrogant…..
I don’t think Malaysia will do it….. Too many red tapes. If they have done long ago they would have collected millions $$ like Spore
At last now oni got brain to do it
.
Any kudos to state gov
Rm20 no worth shud be rm50 to rm100 for sg vehicle
Pls impose. The higher, the better

Yes sure need to charge for fair to Malaysia
Too little la.. Rm20? Make it rm50 or above..
Dis is bullshit.tmj enter singapore free. spore gov enter free.y must both country impose fee for public car????
Another additional income for both government. The people of both nation have to pay for it and we arguing among each other and both government will still be working together and doing more business.
harap2 benda nie betul2 jadi…they should pay it….TUNJUK BELANG kat malaysia….tak salah suruh dia org bayar levy.kita org malaysia bayar roadtax dia org pulak pakai free…mana boleh cam nie?? so better the proposal get approval.. Dn dilaksanakan secepat mungkin….
Just charge RM250 terus. Dont want them to be here anyway.
Less Singaporeans will drive in to jb. Less expenses by Singaporeans. Who will lose out?
use the money to maintain the roads??
“maintain” the road you meant?
Good job malaysia………no more jam like hell on border….
Roy, it’s your own Malaysia people who created this mess. First a tudung Malay psycho woman went past the our customs without a passport. And then an old man smuggled drugs into here and escaped. Both were caught. And after that what happened, the security even got tighter. So blame your own people first, ok?
Please lah. Don’t be ingrates. Might as well u Malaysians say all foreigners not welcome. Then no one will shop in your establishments. Last time I checked, your country would economically succeed that way. Kebodohan korg terserlah eh?
Please lah. Don’t be ingrates. Might as well u Malaysians say all foreigners not welcome. Then no one will shop in UK establishments. Last time I checked, your country would economically succeed that way. Kebodohan korg terserlah eh?
I am a singaporean working in singapore and residing in JB. I have been driving daily in and out for years. To fair to both sides, I have to agree with our malaysian counterparts that the jams have always stems from singapore side of the immigration. What I have noticed is that the singapore immigration is not equipped to handle large volumes of traffic. That aside, please remember that singaporean spend million of ringgits each weekend in JB and invest in huge amounts of properties in JB which was built to attract Singaporean. C’mon guys, let’s not bicker about this. We, the people of both countries will not benefit from this. All monies generated from this will not even benefit us. Blame it on the guys at the top.
Serve u singapore…
Malaysia government should use back the same exchange rate to change for very single Singapore registered vehicle. Instead of GST this also able to Majukan economy Malaysia .
S’poreans come to M’sia to spend money on shopping and enjoy themselves, which is a profit for M’sia. If they impose a fee of RM50, most probably less S’poreans will go in, resulting less profit for them. Thinking they should set a levy on SG cars? Well, think again.
This is long overdue. In fact, we should charge RM 100. They come in, get cheaper stuff and go back to their pigeon hole. In the meantime, prices in JB has gone up so much do to the kiasu nation.
Should charge higher price
singaporeans go in to spend money, the money flows around malaysia. Singaporeans pay money to go in, the money goes into some currupted officer’s pocket. and less Singaporeans will go in.
Since when did we start going Malaysia for free? hmmm if it’s too expensive to go Malaysia tourist will just stop coming see who suffer more lol
singapore charges singaporeans $100sgd to enter the casinos
malaysia should charge an equivalent of $200rm to be fair
Malaysia Boleh… We will boycott if you try
“The money collected could be set aside to help maintain the roads in the state, he pointed out.” Since when e maintenance ever lasted.. eg. they covered a pot hole but it’s gets bigger in no time. They keeping filling up e hole so many times n never get e job done properly. That’s where e money gonna go keeping filling up with cheap material so they can ask for more money.. it would have been a beautiful city if only they really maintain it. without e levy, so can’t do a good job in e infrastructure? Can spend so much money on building custom n then suka change mind, build another one just like that.
Another “gold mine” for the Malaysian authority. Getting rich overnight
Even how congested the traffic is in the end everbody can be at work on time or be at home on time.. we need each other.. dun fight2 ok.. MY nedd to work in SG and SG need to stay in MY.. make love not war ;-p
Ok what.. win win situation for both country… MY work in SG, SG is ok with it and SG stay in MY, MY is ok with it.. same goes with the levy..
I suggest the Malaysia Government to increase the Levy to RM$80-RM$100. This way, it will definitely make many Singaporean not worth to enter Malaysia anymore. Then the Johor Area will be free from congestion and also the shop, stall makan and petrol kiosk
owners can also relax at home to have more family time……
cheers to the increase of Levy
LOL the number of malaysian cars on sg road and driving like some “i own the fucking road” drivers uncountable srsly. u malaysians go back malaysia work la go earn u rm2k a month dun come here earn 2k sgd still cry father cry mother. cant stop laughing at the comments
Machiam going zoo like that. Must pay to go in? Seriously?!!
Haiya… actually both also bodoh… govt charge… govt makan… public makan apa? Charge can charge… but charge car who travelling alone… they are the ones who create more jamm..
Penny wise Pound foolish. In the end Malaysia businessman suffer.
you impose a levy to enter malaysia, you lose easily 80% of singaporean cars entering your country and your revenue will fall short. just imagine how much your petrol stations earn from singaporeans. how many malaysians will even pump 97 & above? considering 95 is around.. RM2.1? and 97 is around 3.5?
lets use 50 liters as a benchmark for comparison. if you pump RON97 in JB, it’ll be about.. RM160? thats equivalent to +- SGD65.
and if you pump 50 liters in singapore, assuming you pump 95, it’ll be around.. SGD100, BEFORE your discount cards / credit cards etc. After those discounts.. maybe it’ll be around $85?
thats a mere difference of SGD20. you impose a levy, people will barely even save a single cent. you think they’re still gonna enter your country and pump petrol?
bodoh pe kambing
Too many red tapes. Who will invest in ur property if you impose a RM50 every day with go in and ur $35 include ERP charges.. do Singapore car include toll too?
Both side ppls lose , only both Gov counting $$$ happily. Traffic issue is the cause and work by both authority but to blame and burden to it’s ppls without proper review their infrastructure. Pls, ppl must stop blame both side of this . Both side need each others, Malaysia travel to SG musn’t only for work , many go to casino, expo and shopping. SG ppl not only go Johor for leisure, property hop, they do business and work too. How really can picture it. Ask it again , what gov have done for this? Check both side.
let be rational. Singapore is a small country and there is a limitation on how many car it can support on the road. let look at the VEP implemented by LTA.
http://www.lta.gov.sg/content/ltaweb/en/roads-and-motoring/driving-in-and-out-of-singapore/vehicle-entry-permit-vep-fees-and-toll-charge.html
VEP: Mon to Fri, 2am to 5pm.
Free: Mon to Fri, 5pm to 2am.
: Sat and Sun full day.
: 10 days per year.
Motorcycle still the old rate of $4.
From the above, it is clear that the reason is to ease congestion. with the excellent exchange rate of SGD to MYR, more and more friends from Malaysia is driving into Singapore for work which can be a problem for a tiny country. Please note that Singapore government did not increase the price for motorcycle as motorcycle often causes less congestion on the road and parking problem compare to cars. it is still a more welcome mode of transport into Singapore for work for the Singapore government.
I hope our Malaysia friends will not take it as our government is just targeting you guys. Singapore Government does worst to it own people. They have road tax, COE and ERP. the government is not only cutting the total amount of COE and but reduce the amount motorcycle COE which traditionally is the mode of transport for blue collar workers for the sake of putting more into car COE and earning them more revenue in the process. this action cause the sharp increase of prices for motorcycle which is a problem to the poorer folk who often ride small CC bike to work. not to mention cutting down COE for commercial vehicle which will drive up business cost.
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/fewer-coes-next-quarter/1266426.html
as for the 400 percent increase for commercial vehicle. come on, it is still $40 per month!!! as much as one can argue it impact on Malaysia trucking companies, all they have to do is to increase a couple of dollars per trip for Singapore customer will be more then enough to cover the cost. In my work, i deal with Malaysia trucking companies in the past.
as for Malaysia Government, they are doing it for the sake of getting even. not really a good reflection of them. I mean, it a free world and they can do what they want and that fair. I quite sure Singapore driver will still go to Malaysia with the small increase. The increase won’t be much. we all know who are the owners of some petrol station there isn’t it? Malaysia government is smart, drum up nationalist and collect more money. No prize for guessing where some of the money is going to.
