Singaporeans Endure Jam To Fly Out From Senai

More Singaporeans are willing to endure traffic congestion at the Causeway, to fly out from Senai International Airport because it works out cheaper for them.

“This is a positive sign for Johor’s tourism development and I congratulate Senai International Airport for its achievements.

“It goes to show that our airport standards meets the expectations of Singaporean travellers that they do not mind crossing the border to catch a flight here,” he said when contacted.

He said Singaporeans still made up the bulk of Johor’s tourist arrivals, at around 60%.

According to Senai Airport Terminal Services chief executive officer Md Derick Basir, 50,000 Singaporean travellers flew from the airport last year, compared to 35,000 in 2014.

He said the increase was despite the traffic jams and time taken to cross the border, which could sometimes take up to two hours during peak periods.

The Singaporean travellers usually catch flights from Senai to domestic destinations like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, or to foreign destinations via AirAsia flights, he said.

“They see the value in flying from Senai as it is cheaper than from Changi,” he said, adding that the airport expected to handle 3.1 million travellers by year end, up from last year’s 2.51 million.

Md Derick added that when the company took over in 2014, the airport only had about 800,000 travellers per annum.
